What
is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer occurs when normal cells in the breast
mutate and metastasize. Other nearby tissues and parts are
affected by the spread such as glands or lobules, blood
vessels, lymph vessels and lymph nodes. Most commonly, tumors
form because of accumulated abnormal cells. All tissue types
in the breast can form cancer but the condition more
commonly originates in the glands or ducts.
Breast cancer constitutes most of the malignancies
found in women. It is the fifth type of cancer with the
highest mortality rate and the most common cause of cancer
death in women. Recently, there were over half a million
deaths due to breast cancer. There is a 1 in 8 lifetime
risk of developing the condition and a 1 in 28 chance of
dying because of breast cancer. Just in the United States
alone, over 200,000 new cases were diagnosed with 40,000
expected to result in death.
Classifying Breast Cancer
Breast cancer is classified according to a number
of factors just like other cancers.
The common factors checked are tissue of origin, location
of the tumor or tissue of origin, type of tissue or histology,
grade of tumor, stage of tumor, tumor appearance and activity,
status of nodes and metastasis. At first, the cells are
mutated but remain in the original location in the duct
or lobule basement membrane. Mitosis or cell division and
metastasis or spread occurs next passing through the basement
membrane and moving to other remote areas of the body.
