Breast Cancer : Signs and Symptoms
Lump formation is the most common sign
that remains for a long period of time. An asymptomatic
nodule may be present before other signs and
symptoms appear. Breast pain or mastodynia or
pain in the lump is another symptom of breast
cancer in its early stages. Signs of inflammation
like pain, warmth, redness and swelling can
then occur if small lymph vessels in the skin
and lymphatic vessels are invaded by abnormal
tissues. The skin can have an orange peel texture
also referred to as peau dorange.
The lump may be present in the breast or at
the underarm. The breast may change in appearance
as well by thickening or increasing in size
and shape. The skin of the breast may appear
pitted or form ridges. The nipples may turn
inward, turn red or scale or have abnormal discharges.
As metastasis continues to other areas of the
body, manifestations like fever, chills, bone
and joint pain, jaundice, neurological symptoms
and pleural effusion are also noticeable. The
drawback is that early signs and symptoms
of breast
cancer may not be present so women
should exert extra effort to diagnose by doing
self-breast examination and having thorough
a breast exam annually.
